Nova is looking for Recommendations

My novel aka #classifiednovel is on the fantasy/paranormal side of things but I am aiming for some strong characters.  I feel like currently, I am on the right track but they can be taken to the next level still.  Some of my favorite books are very character based even while being inside fantasy worlds.  The Giver, Fahrenheit 451, Katniss in The Hunger Games being a few of them. So this is where you come in!  I need some strong character books as sort of research for my book.  I don't read much contemporary but I am trying to branch out into them.  I want to know what are some of your beloved characters and some of the best emotional books in YA are.  They can be current YA or anything back in time so bring on the recommendations!

PS...Book Club went amazing tonight while we discussed Wither by Lauren Destefano.  I loved this book even though it gave me creepy shivers being in this world.  I will be reading Fever when it hits the shelves to see where the story goes next.  And yet again, I learned sooooo much just talking with a group of people about what they liked and didn't like with the book.  This let alone, has helped me become a better writer.  I can't wait to see what more it has to offer.

  1. Sophie from Hex Hall is a pretty fun, strong character. I also enjoyed Emerson from Hourglass. Classically speaking, Jane Eyre, and Elizabeth from Pride and Prejudice.

  2. Thanks so much! I have seen Hex Hall around and had a sneek peek of it before it was released but I haven't read it. I keep eyeing Hourglass specifically because the cover is very appealing to me. I will definitely be checking that out as well. I have read those classics back in the day but I find it hard to read in the classic voice. That is just me though. Thanks for the recommendations!

  3. I see Alex from Half Blood as a strong character. She still has a lot of growing to do but she learns with every step. Riley from Demon Trappers Daughter. Kat from Heist Society. Cammie from Gallagher Girls series. Charlie from First Grave on the Right. Megan from Iron Fey series. Those are the few I can think off the top of my head in recent books. Hope it helps!

  4. I haven't read Half Blood either but I own Daimon as an ebook. I believe I have one of the books from the Iron Fey and Heist Society. I don't have any of the others. Thanks a ton Valia! I will have to look into those as well.

  5. I think the best emotional books are all mainly contemoporary novels. For instance, Don't Breathe a Word by Holly Cupala and Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma are perfect emotional reads.

As for strong characters..I would have to go with Alex and Britany from Perfect Chemistry, they both have very strong personalities and ideas about life. I also have to respect Gwen and Logan from Touch of Frost by Jennifer Estep.

As for the best storyline out there that will just shock the crap out of you and leave you breathless. That would have to go to Michelle Hodkin's The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer.

Hope you find something great to read whether you are looking for a strong plot, characters or an overall great emotional read. :)
